How Hypnotherapy Helped Me Control the Urge to Pick My Skin and Manage Stress

Updated: 6 days ago

Success Story: Breaking Free from Nailbiting

"For years, I struggled with a habit I couldn’t control—picking the skin around my nails until they were raw and painful.

Dermatillomania - skin picking - affects around 3 mio. Americans.

It started during stressful moments, but soon it became an unconscious routine I couldn’t stop. I tried everything—creams, gloves, even fidget tools—but nothing worked for long. I felt ashamed and frustrated, especially when people would notice my hands.

Skin Picking is often associated with stress and anxiety.

A friend suggested hypnotherapy, and although I was skeptical, I decided to give it a try. During my first session, we explored the deeper emotional triggers behind my habit. I learned that my picking wasn’t just about stress—it was my mind’s way of coping with feelings of anxiety and perfectionism that I hadn’t addressed.

Hypnosis addresses Skin Picking by eliminating the emotional triggers behind the habit

Through hypnosis, I was guided into a deeply relaxed state where I could access my subconscious mind and reframe my thought patterns.

Right after the first session I noticed that the intense urge to pick became less frequent, and I felt more in control when the urge did arise. I had 2 more sessions and worked on techniques to manage my stress.

I started to feel more calm and centered in my daily life. Now, my hands are healed, and I no longer feel the compulsion to pick. I continue to use self-hypnosis techniques to manage stress and keep myself grounded. Hypnotherapy didn’t just help me stop picking—it helped me rediscover confidence and control in other areas of my life too."
